If you have been a follower of the Productivity Powered by P.E.O.P.L.E.® newsletter, you have probably gained a valuable insight about me. My family is very important to me. Growing up as the middle child of seven, I had the privilege of having a wonderful childhood. It is the familial relationships that have established my core values, my fundamental beliefs and most importantly it governs how I behave or respond to situations. A long way to say—here is another example from my family life.

As a child when one of our siblings or friends did something we did not like, we would draw an imaginary line and say "You better not cross that line." As the person approached the line we would back up and draw another line and say "I dare you to cross that line" and as they continued to approach we would draw another line and say "I double dog dare you to cross that line." At this point you had to protect your boundary by taking action, which could include but not limited to invoking the parent card—"I'm gonna tell daddy" or at the risk of losing the scuffle launch an attack or simply start crying (this would bring the older siblings around to solve the problem) but whatever you did—you could not flinch.

In today's work environment the convergence of work and life is creating a conundrum on how to manage work rules while setting and maintaining personal boundaries. Gone are the days of working from 8-5. Our work has become the primary source for building personal and professional relationships, defining social and philanthropic involvement, advising on our personal health and impacting our emotional well-being. As a result the lines are blurred between work rules/requirements and personal boundaries.

More and more, in my practice, clients are voicing concerns around loss of identity and personal space due to the expectation that in order to be successful you must be available around the clock. We feel guilty when we take time for ourselves. It is easy to assign ownership of blurred lines to our bosses or the organizational culture, however ultimately, it is our responsibility to set boundaries, communicate those boundaries and assess which boundaries are flexible and which are firm.

Boundaries are invisible lines around us that let people know the limits of what they can say or do around you and what you are willing or unwilling to do. If your boundaries are too solid you build walls, too weak and you allow others' actions to impact your well-being. As illustrated in my child hood example, boundaries can be moved however when the line is in jeopardy of being crossed, we are required to take action.

Boundaries held firm can help make life easier, reduce conflict and improve relationships. Plus, they're a real self-esteem booster. Take the boundaries quiz to determine How well constructed are your boundaries? If you answered true to fewer than 6 of these questions, make setting boundaries a priority.

At DB Latimore Professional Services Group, we offer customized programs to assist you on your professional journey. Please don't hesitate to contact us for more information—info@dblatimore.com.
