I read a quote recently that said, "summer is where laziness meets respectability." I laughed. I will be the first to admit that summer promotes a relaxing and less productive atmosphere. It is such an appropriate quote to describe the lazy days of summer. It's a season for us to relax, rejuvenate and play.

The summer vibe has been evident in many of my meetings this month. I have had two walking meetings and three lunch meetings on the patio of different restaurants. My clients are certainly embracing opportunities to work in a relaxing environment where they can take advantage of the sunny summer days.

Organizations recognize the need to provide a more relaxed environment for their employees during the summer. Flexible work hours, casual dress and company employee events are the most common methods to recognize the season of summer.

Maintaining productivity during the summer can be challenging, however incorporating playful activities or a play ethic will fuel productivity, boost morale and encourage teamwork. The helpguide.org offers 3 tips for manager and employer:

1. Provide opportunities for social interaction among employees.
2. Encourage Creative thinking.
3. Encourage workers to take regular breaks away from their desk.

I encourage you to engage in creative play. For example: ban power point presentations for the summer, require employees to build out their presentations on a story board, as if making a movie. Another solution would be to hold meetings outside of conference rooms, find places with plenty of sunshine and include at least 10 minutes for fun, such as a quick theme based game associated with the meeting purpose. Create a cross functional team tournament focused on one or more of a strategic initiative.

These are just a few suggestions, to having a fun filled productive summer at work.

Summer Is Here - Take Time To Add Play To Your Workday

The late A. Bartlett Giamatti, former president of Yale University and one-time commissioner of Major League Baseball said, "You can learn more about a society by observing the way they play as opposed to how they work."

Our high tech life with its accelerated pace has fostered a culture that seems to be always working, always rushed, and always connected. With cell phones interrupting the theater, laptop computers at the beach, internet connections at every other cafe, and home offices that beckon us all hours of the night and day, it's hard to separate "play" from "work." Yet to maintain balance in our lives, and for our ultimate well-being, play is important.

Lenore Terr, a psychiatrist at the University of California, San Francisco, and author of Beyond Love and Work: Why Adults Need to Play, argues that play is crucial at every stage of life. In play, we discover pleasure, cultivate feelings of accomplishment, and acquire a sense of belonging. When we play, we learn and mature and find an outlet for stress. "Play is a lost key," Terr writes. "It unlocks the door to ourselves."
