On November 9th, the world woke to the election of new leadership in America. The American people through its democratic process had chosen the perceived least likely candidate. As I emerged from my room at the Hershey Park Resort, the stillness in the air was eerie. It was a feeling that I cannot easily explain, but to say the air seemed heavy. As I spoke briefly with the valet, I knew that in that moment in time, nothing life shattering had occurred and yet unsettled anticipation was looming.

Having a three and half hour drive ahead of me, I decided that I would not talk on the phone, listen to the radio or glance at social media. This would be my time to process what change in America would look like. Because, we live in America, I respect the democratic process and America had spoken. It wanted change.

As I made the drive home, I could not shake the memory of living in Germany on November 9th, 1989 and celebrating the Berlin Wall coming down. The images of the citizens crying, shouting and dancing at the end of separatism and division, and the hope of equality and freedom were extremely vivid in my mind. The irony was not lost on me, that our President-Elect had vowed to build a wall that would create the type of division that was so detrimental to Germany. The symbolic wall had already been built during the campaign.

How does the country move forward when there is not trust in leadership? Only time will tell. This month our article explores the four distinct elements for building trust as leaders.

The final hour of my drive, I celebrated the 5th anniversary of DB Latimore Professional Services Group, which began on November 9th, 2011. It has been a magnificent journey filled with change, opportunities, disappointments, successes and partnerships.

I reflected on the dynamic team retreat I had just facilitated while at Hershey Park, realizing that I was extremely excited to be facilitating and supporting teams, augmenting the services of my HR colleagues and coaching at all levels. I welcome the opportunity to work with you and your organization.

Becoming A Trusted Leader

"We can build our leadership upon fear, obligation, or trust. However, only a foundation of trust results in the collaboration and goodwill necessary to achieve our peak performance."

These words, from organizational design expert Roger Allen, could hardly be more succinct in expressing the central role that trust plays in building and leading high-performance organizations.

With the integrity of our business leaders under such a microscope these days, it's valuable to take a moment for a refresher on trust in leadership. For integrity, though critical to trust, isn't the only element of a trust-based management style. According to Seattle-based management expert Stephen Robbins, trust is based on four other distinct elements in your relationship with the people you lead.
